Training of Officials of Mozambique's National Correctional Service

This took place on 29 July 2014, at the Penitenciaria Provincial Sul de Machava, which is the old Central Prison. Officials from the Correctional Services were trained on international law relating to the prevention of torture.

This was an A5i event. 

In 2013, Mozambique approved an internal resolution on OPCAT ratification and designation of its newly established Human Rights Commission as the NPM. On 1 July 2014, Mozambique officially deposited the instrument of accession to the OPCAT with the United Nations Secretary-General. Mozambique ratified UNCAT in 1999.

The Article 5 Initiative works for the prevention and eradication of torture in Africa through the development of practice-aimed resources. The Article 5 Initiative aims to support African institutions in improving domestic compliance with international law obligations, norms and procedures under the United Nations Convention against Torture and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights. The Article 5 Initiative focuses on six post-conflict African countries, namely Burundi, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa and Uganda.
