CSPRI participates in expert seminar on anti-torture legislative frameworks

CSPRI researcher Gwénaëlle Dereymaeker presented CSPRI's research findings on South Africa's anti-torture legislative framework at the Pan-African seminar hosted by REDRESS in Nairobi, Kenya, on 28-29 September.

The meeting took place around a comparative Pan-African project on anti-torture legislative frameworks in Africa. It brought together experts who carried out research on legislative frameworks in DRC, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda. Commissioner Lawrence Mute as the Chairperson of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa (CPTA), representatives from REDRESS and other organisations advocating for the adoption and implementation of effective anti-torture legislation, also participated. Participants discussed the findings of each country study, identified crosscutting issues, challenges and best practises as well as the role of regional and international mechanisms. Participants also discussed the development of national and regional strategies for the drafting, adoption and implementation of anti-torture legislative frameworks.
